Knowing of the Krups reputation and seeing a cool, blue, round, "digitized" analog clock on the demo unit, impulse buying got the better of us. Programming and using the KM-1000 was an intuitively obvious dream. The first pot - and six months of pots - of various Trader Joe's coffees have been wonderful...after we figured out that to return the carafe to the unit, you have to tilt the carafe backwards slightly to reduce the contact angle of the carafe lid and the filter basket.<br /><br />But...after about 3 months, what looked like a calcium deposit began to form on the surface of the heating plate. No biggie. However, when it got bigger and bigger, closer examination revealed that the dark brown coating was coming off exposing the base metal underneath. The tech folks at Krups had never had any calls about it nor had the folks at California Electric which is one of the Krups factory authorized service centers. Fortunately, Macy's has a 180-day return policy so this afternoon it was returned.<br /><br />Bottom line: Because the KM-1000 makes superb coffee, is a joy to use, and looks good just sitting on the counter top (the water reservoir looks like a translucent, semi-circular fish tank), I only hope that the coating problem was an isolated incident. Although you never see the coating failure unless you remove the carafe, if you're a perfectionist like me...<br /><br />UPDATE: The replacement unit is vastly superior! Krups has totally redesigned the carafe. The pouring spout is much larger and now wedge-shaped making the dripping problem when pouring (I didn't mention that earlier) a thing of the past. Also, either the carafe lid and/or the filter holder has been redesigned such that I no longer have to tilt the carafe to return it to the heading pad. A call to Krups confirmed the redesign. With all new products, employees also test the unit and their comments are noted. However, it's only when customers call in with the same complaints/observations, that manufacturing changes are made. It looks like Krups actually listens to its customers. The coffee maker had to be unplugged every other day and it was very easy to set up the clock. The blue light was a little bit too much (it used to illuminate the whole kitchen at night) and although it didn't bother us it stop working after three months, which we didn't mind. We don't know if the clock stop working by the third month as well, but after five months of use the electrical system completely failed, this coffee maker stop working. It's easy to use, easy to program, and makes great-tasting coffee. It looks great, too.<br /><br />The only problem is the stainless steel surface. It's brushed steel. If you touch it, your fingers will leave dark fingerprints that are easy to see and hard to remove. I had to use a damp paper towel to get the marks off the metal. If you buy this model, you will have to train yourself to only handle the coffee maker by the plastic and never touch the stainless steel or you will be wiping it forever. <br /><br />Having said that, I'm still glad I bought this coffee maker.<br> <br /><strong>Easy to use, good looking, fast and good brew</strong> - dorel_c - SPRING, TX United States<br>I owned the Krups KM1000 coffee machine for about one month.<br />So far so good:<br />Positive:<br />- the analog electronic clock. It has a very nice blue light and the "analog" design is beautiful. Nice little blue light in the kitchen during night.<br />- very easy to set the time and the auto brew:<br />H and Min buttons set the time on the clock. Push "Prog" button and the light in the ON/OFF button blinks blue showing that if you use H and Min buttons you can set the Auto-start time. After a few seconds it stops blinking and the time is programmed. If you push Auto, the On/Off button lights blue showing that it set to start automatically.<br />When is brewing the same On/Off button lights RED.<br />- very large filling mouth on th reservoir. It covers the whole back of the unit basically, so you can fill it using your right or left hand, as you please.<br />Negatives:<br />- The carafe lid can not be removed which makes it difficult to put in the dishwasher.<br />- Sometimes the carafe hangs in the filter support (in fact in the valve which stops the dripping when removing the carafe during the brewing cycle). Friedman - Texas<br>This morning was the first time I used this coffee maker. I set the timer and when I went to the kitchen, I noticed there were only 4 cups instead of 8. It appeared to be finished. Puzzled by this, I removed the carafe, and coffee started pouring out of the filter onto the hot plate. When I re-seated the carafe, the remaining 4 cups poured into the carafe. The stop and pour mechanism should not malfunction halfway through the brewing process, nor should it be so sensitive.<br /><br />Also, when I flipped open the top after brewing, I noticed that the coffee filter had collapsed and coffee grounds were all inside the carafe.<br /><br />Another drawback of this coffee maker is that you must rotate the nozzle in order to load and unload the filter basket. This model is represented as a 4-cup espresso maker, but it actually makes only 4 ounces. Using a 2-ounce demi-tasse as a reasonable measure, the model would be properly represented as a 2-cup espresso maker. Were espresso makers rated by their capacity in ounces, rather than cups, I would not have ordered it. As it was, I ordered and promptly returned it. My compliments to Amazon for making it simple.<br /><br />In addition to its small size, the item is poorly made. The edge of the lid is razor sharp, and, in fact, it cut my hand. <br /><br />I ordered this espresso maker because I thought it would be best to replace my aluminum one with stainless steel. But I would prefer to continue using my aluminum Bialetti to putting up with the poor quality of this cheapie. My husband bought us a single serve coffee maker but I found myself wishing I had a regular coffeemaker that just did the basics and made coffee!<br /><br />This fits the bill with a few extras. The price is definitely right (I paid ). The feature that I use daily is setting the maker to brew my coffee before I get downstairs in the morning. Nothing quite like smelling coffee upon awakening! <br /><br />The flaws are few, considering the price. I wish that there was a way to override or extend the automatic shut-off. It shuts off after 2 hours, which is rarely enough time to finish the 10 cups I've brewed. The unit also drips a large amount of water onto the heating plate when the grinds basket is removed from the machine (after brewing). Programmable and turns off after 2 hours. I am tired of my coffee maker burning because we forget it on and it stays on for over 10 hours. Now I can rest assured it will turn off after a little while.<br />I had a Mr. Coffee for my everyday coffee and it worked great until it got burned on all day too many times.<br />I bought the same model (except for the previously mentioned features) and it is inexpensive and works as well. I have tried it already and no problems yet. I have an expensive cappuccino maker but that is not for every day.<br />This Mr. Coffee is what I need. It is simple to set and use, you can get your coffee ready the night before, and wake-up to freshly brewed coffee. So, while you're waiting for the replacement pitchers to arrive, put some "Gorilla" glue on all seam splits(this works very well). To get the stains off the pitcher, use either hydrogen peroxide(50/50 mixture with HOT water), or chlorine bleach at the same 50/50 mixture. This method will work if you allow the cleansers to remain in the pitcher for about 20 minutes and then wash and rinse. I bought mine about 5 or 6 years ago, and it came with 2 pitchers... One of the pitchers broke during moving, but before it did (i only used one at a time) the pour spout started to warp and melt a little from frequent use and the tea stained the plastic, no matter what i used to wash it with.. The plastic also scratches easily and looks really dingy. I'm now using the 2nd pitcher, and i've been using it longer than the first... the same stratching and melting has occured, and now the pour spout is VERY disfigured, it barely fits in the slot for the maker and its cracking so it's difficult to pour the tea.. The actual unit still works great, i've never had any type of problem, but I really would like to buy 2 replacements so I can have extra tea...
